UK universities see rise in international applicants

5 February 2019

Data revealed by UCAS has revealed that the number of international students applying to study at UK universities has risen for the first time in three years.

In total 561,420 people applied to start a course this autumn, the first increase since 2016, with 63,690 students applying from outside the EU, an increase of 9% on last year. There was also a small rise in students applying from inside the EU, due in large part to the news that fees will remain frozen to EU students for the September 2019 academic year, despite fears over Brexit.

Clare Marchant, UCAS chief executive, said: "In this time of uncertainty, it's welcome news to see more EU and international students wanting to come and study in the UK."
